Get Beakman and Nye on the phone pronto

The Lurker has been watching all the press about the need for young people to get in to science fields because we are losing or lost our hold on that field. It seems to the Lurker that when science was cool and interesting was when you had people who were making it fascinating on TV. We really could use a slate of new shows featuring explainers and fun experiments for science. I watched Mr. Wizard and tried what he showed me. I did the same for Nye and Beakman. I know what you're thinking, we already have shows like that. Phooey I say. Yes I said Phooey. All the reality driven ones are not exactly interactive asking you to participate. Yes I love Mythbusters too but it's not the same. When Bill Nye would explain something and then challenge you to prove it to yourself that is when science is real.
This really isn't a rant but a wish for more TV that doubled as entertaining and learning. We used to have some intelligent people on TV. Now we embrace the dumb and trashy we give them commercial deals. Jersey Shore and its ilk are making us numb idiots.
One of the reasons we had science shows was the deal that TV stations had to put on a certain percentage of educational TV per day. That has been gone for a long time and I believe it is a main driver of students not getting excited about science early. I could go on whining about the lack of learning and how we just teach to tests but what's the point you have some show on with the words house wives in it.
Nevermind...

Having a shitty day?

Not anymore! Sit back and watch this wonderful version of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
Raise the volume and sing it loud. Call your cubicle mates over and dance.
Send this to a friend who has had a bad week. This would make the Lurker smile.

Where in the world is Scooter Stevens?

Last night, while cooking some potato Latkes, I watched some of the movie Better Off Dead. I started wondering what happened to all the people from the movie. I found most of them but one is still a mystery..
Scooter Stevens, better known as Badger has no information past 1989. I'll put some of the bits I did find but if you know something about him drop me a comment. It's not like I am worried, I just want the info. In the internet world we live in your life is usually easily documented.

Signed,
The Lurker

Q Do you find that other former child stars have a sense of humor about themselves and their experiences?
A:The only real strong commonality is that we all went to the same places. We all knew the same people. If you see an actor in his 30s who did commercials during the 1980s, you can talk about this kid named Scooter Stevens. He's in Better Off Dead. He plays the little brother who buys the rocket device. Well, Scooter's mom—I don't know how old she was, but she looked like she was in her 40s—she would go to these auditions in these incredibly low-cut, garish evening gowns. They were extremely loud, sparkly things, and she always wore these bouffant wigs. If you asked any kid from Los Angeles who went on commercial auditions for any period of time from 1979 to 1982, they'll probably remember Scooter's mom.

1987 Nominated Young Artist Award Exceptional Performance by a Young Actor, Guest Starring in a Television, Comedy or Drama Series
for: "Tales from the Darkside" (1983).

The Lurker realizes his brain may have exploded

I am a crazy poster. I was invited repeatedly to join Facebook but like most things I do I embrace it wholly (read too much) and over do things. It could be an uncontrolled attention span who knows...

So for today, as a test, I will be only commenting on others and not posting on my personal page. Instead, for today, this will be where I put my comments.
  • Anybody ever make dashi? Got any tips
  • I just read all of the Gottfried tweets and I must say he didn't say anything that wasn't said within hours of other disasters. Even when everything is tumbling around me I'll be going out with a bad joke. Plus if you read it and then felt guilty and donated well all to the good then. I'm not defending him but I will say it allows an edge of the horribleness to be taken down a notch. The fact that people were surprised amazes me. He was the first comedian to break the 911 no jokes wall. The real question is when is it the time to make a joke about something serious?

Best song ever

The Lurker just put up a few more videos. I adore this one.

Is that the definition of premature?

Some new movies coming out

The other day I was wandering through the nets and found a bunch of unique movie coming out. Here's some of the ones that stood out.

  • Super 8 - I have a feeling this is going to be a big deal in the way Close encounters was. Watch the second trailer and let me know what you think. Kids, area 51 and Spielberg, must I say more?
  • Fat, Sick and Nearly dead - You want inspiration to lose weight then see this movie. Looks decent. About an Australian and a juice diet in the US (not sure why)
  • Rubber  - The single strangest premise of a movie ever made...ever, no I'm serious. It is a movie about a homicidal possibly psychic rubber tire. I explained this to Mrs. Lurker and she said you mean like Christine. NOPE. Just a tire. Stop questioning me and go watch the damn trailer. GAWWWWWDDDDD!!!
  • Sucker Punch - At first it looks like the standard crap where a bunch of women in an asylum fight back. As usual things like their nice makeup and combed hair bug me but then the trailer takes a turn I didn't expect. Could be a fun throw away adventure movie. Who knows it might even be good.
  • Bill Cunningham New York  - A documentary about a New York photographer. This seems like a nice strange little movie talking about something I have no idea about , fashion photography. Don't skip just becasue it sounds not like your cup of tea. Watch the trailer.

I don't think you're doing it right

The Lurker is not a fan of St. Pats day but...

I do love this song. So close your eyes to the cheesy images and give a listen.

The Lurker has another migraine

This is unfortunately a rather usual situation  However today I thought I'd share the feeling with you.
Here's 3 snapshots into my head.

Hahahahahaha...Han

Shirtless Man # 4

Note this was supposed to be posted on the 17th.Oh well
The title is Shirtless man builds a time machine and punches himself in the face.
Why are these people making videos? More importantly why is the Lurker sorting through them?

The Lurker has wanted a tattoo...

I love this idea

A thank you to the two people fixing the Japanese reactor

I am sure this insensitive on some level but the Lurker just found it and laughed.
So I pass on the guilty laugh.

Too awesome to wait!!!

Normally I would wait to put this on when I needed another video but frankly, just as the title says, this guy (HERO) is too awesome to wait.
Play this loud.

This makes the Lurker laugh every time

The Lurker has his first patron

Yesterday the Lurker put up a video of a girl talking about Japan. This was posted on the Lurker's Facebook page automatically. There I had a person tell me that he was going to unlike the page for . We went back and forth a very little and he is back in the Lurkerite fold. After all this I received a strange message, Andrew used my tip jar that has been on the page for a year or so. He is the first one to do so. So in effect I now have a patron saint. Granted the donation was 12 cents but the Lurker will take what he can get. So I would like to publicly thank Andrew the Lurkerite by putting him on the patron wall.
Anyone who wants to donate will be put on the wall as well.

Shirtless Man # 2

This one is bigger but nicer. The Lurker wishes him good luck for getting on the Biggest Loser.

If this doesn't make you an Atheist nothing will

The Lurker doesn't blame this rather dumb girl but he does blame the religious culture that spawned it. I feel bad for her growing up with such misinformation that makes her look at a tragedy and think not only her and others wishing for it made it happen but that this is the work of a loving god. Also why start with Japan of all places? So if this happened to the Vatican or someplace with a lot of believers it would be their fault too?

Spring is right around the corner

Shirtless Man # 1

I thought we might begin on a real high note with insane crazy shirtless grandpa.
You may just want to turn this up for the cubicle next to you, unless you want to keep your job.

Shirtless men week

As the Lurker scours the net for good stuff for you he is forced to deal with the new menace, shirtless men videos. I have no idea why this scourge is taking place but I might as well make a theme of it.
So for the rest of the week it's shirtless men week...um....enjoy?

Japan info

This morning the Lurker has been double checking on the safety of friends and family in Japan. Normally I would make a joke to lighten the tension but just not feeling it so instead I'll throw out a ridiculous photo.
As usual Google is one of the first to get their help act together. Try the two links below for info. The second one is amazing

Children are such lightweights

Why are people surprised about Charlie Sheen?

I knew just watching this scene.

Did you know about this?

Why wasn't the Lurker told about this? Years ago I watched every Laverne and Shirley episode. I couldn't get enough of the sitcom. I especially loved Lenny and Squiggy but I never knew they actually created an album. Here is clip from the show.
Now I have to find the album somewhere. If you find it first drop a comment please.

Robotripping

Since the Lurker has been sick and is currently mainlining cough medicine this seemed appropriate.
Enjoy the trip.

Who wouldn't see this movie?

Best presentation ever

The Lurker teaches Powerpoint and talks much of presentation style and the Do's and Don'ts. This kid gives all presenters a run for their money. Not only does he know his material but his timing his downright perfect.
Also it helps just a bit that he is talking about one of coolest nerd devices ever made for mad inventors of the world.
I know I usually waste time here but this a perfect use of your time.

Is this intentional comedy or what?

Mrs. Lurker and I watched the Daily Show the other day and almost fell out of chairs laughing
